活動介紹
In conclusion of his postdoctoral research fellowship (funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education), Dr Tets Kimura will deliver a deeper and more nuanced understanding of today’s Taiwanese cultural and social scenes through the lens of fashion, by focusing on how Japanese fashion has influenced Taiwan. Building upon his previous research on modern and contemporary Taiwanese fashion, he recently completed a paper on Taiwanese vintage fashion culture. By combining fashion and international relations, the model established in his doctoral thesis, now re-written for the monograph Fashion, Soft Power and Cultural Diplomacy (Bloomsbury, 2026 forthcoming), his research aims to make sense of fashion in relation to international relations. Taiwan, positioning itself as a cultural importer rather than a producer or exporter, embraces consumable cultural assets like fashion from democratic nations such as the US, Japan, and South Korea. This cultural flow contributes reinforce Taiwan’s stable contemporary identity. Dr Tets Kimura previously visited NCCU to teach at the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Summer Courses in 2022 and 2023. On this third visit, he has focused exclusively on research. In Australia, he organised and chaired two symposiums on Taiwan studies: “Unpacking Taiwan: Exploring Taiwanese Studies, Culture, and Identity” (2021), and “Bridging Perspectives: Discussions on Japan-Taiwan Relations” (2024). Both events, held at Flinders University, were funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Melbourne.
